Duties
1. Hold regular ballots for vacant market booths
Since 1993, all Macao permanent residents aged 18 years old may participate in open ballots to operate vacant market booths. Currently four ballots for vacant market booths are held each year, in January, April, July and October. The rules of application and the list of vacant booths are posted on the notice board of the Department of Food and Animal Inspection and Control (DIS), Integrated Services Centre, Public Services Centres and all wet markets in Macao. Residents may also visit IAM’s official website or the City Guide for the most updated information on vacant market booths, with the effective application period specified on the list. Before each open balloting event, the information on the balloting date, time and venue will be publicised via mass media. Applicants for the vacant booths are welcome to observe the balloting in person site to ensure the high transparency of the process.

2. Monitoring of the cleanliness of market facilities
The cleanliness of market facilities is closely monitored to ensure that fish stalls are properly cleaned and residues such as fish bones and scales are properly disposed of. Shavings and blood stains on the wall and the ground must be washed off.

3. Supervision of booth tenants
Impromptu inspections are frequently carried out to ensure the availability of fresh foods in good hygienic conditions. All passages in the markets are kept free of obstructions. Regular and impromptu inspections of booth facilities are carried out to ensure the cleanliness of the market.

4. Investigation of the sources and hygienic condition of goods
Inspectors carry out daily checks on the source of goods being sold in the market. Impromptu veterinary hygiene inspections are frequently held to protect public health and advise market booth tenants on necessary improvements.

5. Protection of consumer rights
The division also helps to resolve any transaction-related disputes between consumers and booth tenants, as well as to maintain order and harmony in the markets.

6. Collection of opinion
Public opinion and suggestions are received through different channels including telephone, mail, e-mail or in person at Integrated Services Centre, Public Services Centres, Division of Markets and the inspectors’ office in the markets.
